Project: Silverback
Project: Silverback is a sci-fi horror comic I’ve been on and off writing for the past 5 years. It started off as an RPG (and, honestly, still might be) that explores themes of humanity, found family and reflections of the current political climate in relation to societal differences.
To the public, V-DA is a company that develops cybernetic parts for people who have lost limbs or have physical defects that require transplants, and even offers cosmetic cyber-surgeries to those that can afford it in the era of futurism. Under the surface, however, V-DA invests it’s main branches into cyborg warfare, as well as AI and its potential to control an army of people who have had their brains integrated into V-DA’s system. When the AI, dubbed Him, breaks free of its confines and threatens to shut down everything that relies on its electrical input, from disabling cybernetic hearts, limbs and vital organs in people who have had them replaced with machines to essential cooling and filtering systems that keep the city’s air and water supply clean and safe, V-DA enacts many of their underground experiments to combat the AI.
This includes Quinn, renamed to Silverback, a victim of war who was taken by V-DA and had her arms and parts of her brain replaced by V-DA’s most advanced war tech. After repeatedly proving her unstable defiance of orders, she has been classified and locked away, that is until she is one of the few physically strong enough to take on Him. Quinn and the other chosen candidates, who all fall on a spectrum of pro to anti-cybernetic advancement - from pre-advancement purists to members of a cult dedicated to an AI God - must all figure out how to overcome their differences and work together to save the people of Ether.
Personal Exercise - Fashion Sense
Using a couple of characters, Quinn and Saoirse, from my comic Project: Silverback, this piece is an art exercise I use to try and go deeper into my character’s personalities.
It differs slightly from a typical Modern AU, where characters are drawn as they would look in a different universe more similar to ours, but takes it a step further while still keeping “within canon”. The characters will still have the same scars, defects and experiences from their canon storylines, however they are able to dress in any way they choose.
For Saoirse, her style is very similar in canon, as her aesthetic leans into Romantic Goth. However, if given the choice she would go bolder with her fashion - big skirts, accessories and colours, as well as more Traditional Goth style makeup.
Quinn on the other hand looks far different to her canon design. As what she wears is a part of her uniform as a cyborg belonging to V-DA, she doesn’t have much of a say in how she looks, other than her hair. So, if given the choice, I believe she is the kind of person who would prefer muted colours and loose fitting clothes, especially over her arms and spine. She would also let some of her hair down, tying it up for practicality’s sake, so I think it would be refreshing for her not to dress for combat.
