Bait and Bleed

Bait and Bleed ||

Can any man bred to kill for his country be trusted not to kill for himself?

ABOUT

Bait and Bleed, which started as a game concept made for ELVTR’s Game Narrative Design course, has since grown into my first major game pitch. Set in an alternate version of World War 1, you play as Grigoriy Kislov, a Russian Sergeant sent to a desolate frontline trench used as a dumping ground for criminals the Russian government doesn’t know what to do with. As you get to know your comrades, murders begin to occur, and it’s up to you to figure out the larger mystery of the trench.

The game draws from current events to shine light on/critique modern warfare and its negative effect on people from all sides.

Bait and Bleed: Narrative Essentials

These links will take you to some example scripts I wrote for different scenarios in Bait and Bleed, as well as the game’s pitch document, which has all mechanics, story main characters mapped out (both documents are subject to change as development goes on)

The Relevant Countries

Though the game’s events are inspired by our own past and present history, the War and the countries involved are ALL fictional.

Tvaristan

Tvaristan is Bait and Bleed’s version of Russia. This version of Russia remains largely similar to Soviet Russia, with strict enforcement and control over its people. In this version, Tvaristan is also an empire at this time, with numerous surrounding slavic countries, as well as smaller coastal islands, under its umbrella. This includes The People’s Republic of Pruzniv, which is key to the story that unfolds. Tvaristan is the central country at war in this version of WW1, with other countries, including Sanctelond, joining them as allies to fight the opposing side.

Sanctelond

Sanctelond is Bait and Bleed’s version of England - using Old English etymology to translate to “land of the Saints”. This version of England is as religion centred, if not more, as England was during WW1. The main religion being Sactelicism, with similar ideals and standing in society as the real life Church of England. Sanctelond joins with Tvaristan in their World War, along with numerous other countries.

People’s Republic of Pruzniv

The PRP is Bait and Bleed’s version of a mix between the Tuvan People’s Republic and Prussia, with some naming etymology being derived from The People’s Republic of China. PRP is a smaller country, but nonetheless a strong military power, catching the attention of Tvaristan. After the invasion of Tvaristan into the PRP, a growing resentment formed for the country’s people, not too dissimilar to the dynamic between Ireland and England before Ireland’s independence.  PRP and Tvaristan share a Cyrrilic alphabet.

While the PRP isn’t yet being dragged into the World War by Tvaristan, they are using the opportunity of chaos to gain their independence from Tvaristan by infiltrating the ranks and gathering info/providing enough sabotage to weaken the country. Their plan is, by the end of the war, to have Tvaristan be damaged enough to break free of their shadow, and campaign globally about the horrid conditions Tvaristan left their occupied country in before Tvaristan can retaliate.

Edelreich

Edelreich is Bait and Bleed’s version of Germany, using Germanic naming conventions for an empire mixed with the German word Edel (noble), to roughly mean The Noble Empire. The official language is Edelan. Edelreich is the empire at war with Tvaristan during the events of the game’s WW1, conflicting after Einreich conflicted over lands in their respective umbrellas. Though having fewer allies than Tvaristan, Einrich’s military prowess is near unmatched, making the conflict brutal.

Other countries of note:

Bulska - Bait and Bleed’s version of Bulgaria (SouthEast Europe) and ally of Tvaristan, official language is Bulskan

Koltrubíč - Bait and Bleed’s version of Poland (Central Europe) and ally of Tvaristan, official language is Koltrian

Hutar - Bait and Bleed’s version of Pakistan (South Asia). Though not an explicit ally of Tvaristan, a small number of men from there volunteered to fight for Tvaristan

What did I do?

As my first (for now) solo game, I am responsible for creating all 2D assets for the game.

This includes all character portraits for the 9 major characters, along with different expressions for different scenes and dialogue options. A big challenge of this project was to not only make the characters look different enough to be identifiable on sight - especially as the 3D character models are much simpler - but as realistic to the 1900’s time period as possible. From referencing Russian soldier uniforms to hairstyles of the time period, a lot of work was put into making these characters visually appealing, yet just as much the kind of people one could see on the street - all while posing as visual representations of the different consequences of war.

Characters

Arthur Ovechkin

Sergeant Grigoriy Kislov

Age: Early 40’s

Ethnicity: White - Half Sanctelisc, Half Pruznivian

Place of Birth: People’s Republic of Pruzniv (PRP)

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Sanctelisc, Tvaristanian

Personality: Blunt, distant, but soft-hearted and caring beneath his shell

Abilities: Trained field medic, fluent in Sanctelisc as well as Tvaristanian

Voice: A gravelly but soft-spoken and underlyingly kind man with a Russian accent. He sounds older than he is.

Background: Grigoriy was born in the PRP, a then poorer but independent country bordering Tvaristan, to his Pruznivian father and Sanctelisc mother, along with his older sister Zoya. After Tvaristan began to invade the PRP, Grigoriy’s mother fled to Sanctelond with the aim of using her citizenship to at least allow her children to join her later, while her husband stayed and joined the Pruzivian’s Resistance - an armed group retaliating against Tvaristan. During his time in The Resistance, Grigoriy’s father was killed in action, leaving Zoya to take care of Grigoriy alone. Though Grigoriy was still hopeful in his mother’s pursuit of their freedom, Zoya, then 16, rejected fleeing her home instead of defending it like her father, believing their mother abandoned them, and encouraged Grigoriy to join her in the Resistance. Despite knowing that - as a then 14 year old - there was a limit to how much he could help, Grigoriy supported his sister despite his fears, attending protests and rallies with her. It was at one of these rallies, filled with the starving and angry children of men and women who had fought and died defending their country, that the protest got out of hand. Tvaristanian soldiers, who were known to monitor the youth protests, opened fire after one of the soldiers got glassed by one of the older boys, killing a number of the teenage audience. This included Zoya, who took a bullet to the abdomen while leading Grigoriy away. Grigoriy never forgot the shooter’s face, and later discovered his name - a young Pyotr Ushakov. Witnessing this traumatised Grigoriy, solidifying his rage with the state of Tvaristan’s invasion, giving him the push to join the PRP’s army as an informant to tear Tvaristan apart from the inside..

Visual Description: Grigoriy is a tall, hunched man with a thick unkempt beard. His eyes are a deep blue, beady, and hard to see under his thick eyebrows. What’s left of his hair is thin, sparse and greying. His arms are covered in light scars from years scratching them as a coping mechanism/self punishment, almost always hidden underneath his military uniform, which he stopped properly maintaining years ago. His weariness makes him look older than he is.

Age: 18

Ethnicity: White - 3/4 Sanctelisc, 1/4 Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Sanctelond

Currently Living: TvaristanTerritory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Sanctelisc

Personality: Arthur is overly keen to be of use, and insecure about his inability to understand Russian. He is uncommonly willing to be vulnerable and explore his feelings for a boy in the 1910’s, a result of being raised around sisters.

Abilities: Skilled in decryption and keeping secrets.

Voice: A boyish, animated and light voice. Very posh British accent, with a slight stutter. When extremely nervous, has a tendency to mutter and laugh.

Background: Arthur was born upper-middle class in Sanctelond. His family consists of his half Tvaristanian father, Sanctelisc mother and three older sisters. Despite Arthur’s keen interest in both sides of his heritage, his father heavily discouraged engaging with his Tvaristanian culture - as his father views his own poverty-stricken upbringing, disgust with Tvaristan’s current political actions, and subsequent marriage into the British upper-middle class as deeply shameful. His mother, however, helps Arthur as much as she can to explore his heritage behind her husband’s back. She goes so far as to help Arthur to travel to Tvaristan to study mathematics, with a course in cryptography, along with hiring him as an interpreter while he studies. It’s at university that he meets his best friend Stanislav, who takes Arthur under his wing. However, as the lead up to world war brews, Tvaristan announces their mandatory conscription laws for all above 18. Arthur, though not a traditional citizen, is proudly against conscription on behalf of Stanislav, attending many protests against the law. At one of these protests, Stanislav attempts to remove Arthur from the protest as police get involved, but Arthur resists, ultimately getting both boys arrested and, as Arthur has family ties to Tvaristan, he is inadvertently deemed qualified to be sent to war with Stanislav. Arthur’s father does nothing to get him out, despite the campaigning from his wife and daughters..

Visual Description: Arthur is a tall, lanky, frail-looking boy with bright ginger hair, a boyish button nose and green eyes, both he inherited from his mother. He has freckles all over his pale face, and large teeth with a gap in the middle (this feature, along with his emotional side, resulting in Fyodor nicknaming him зайка (bunny, a girlish nickname). His uniform is a size or two too big for him, though he does his best to take care of it.

Age: Early 30’s

Ethnicity: White - Bulskan

Place of Birth: Bulska

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Bulskan, Tvaristanian

Personality: Dmitri is prickly and headstrong upon first meeting him, though fiercely loyal. While he is very adept at reading people, he can be blinded by his own perception and beliefs at times, leading him to occasionally being unreasonable. However, once through to him, he accepts his fault with grace and does his best to learn from mistakes. His humour can be a little off-putting, along with his whole demeanour, but it is unclear how much of it is layers upon layers of masking and projection of how he thinks he should be as a man.

Abilities: Senior rifleman and unofficial leader between the previous Sergeant’s disappearance and Grigoriy’s arrival. Adept in survival skills, from maintaining the fire to prolonging survival with the most basic of tools.

Voice: Husky and silken, though slightly nasally due to his cleft lip. While he doesn’t speak English, he knows enough of the basics to either greet you or insult you. When provoked to anger, he loses his softer touch and jumps jarringly into sharp-tongued, bitter debate, though is quick to laugh this tone off - many of the men end up never knowing what to expect with Dmitri.

Background: Dmitri is a war dog through and through. With his parents mostly absent, he learned to survive and fight from his grandfather, a war veteran, and entered the military himself at 16, lying about his age to sign up. As an, at the time, fierce patriot with a violent streak, Dmitri knew the army was his calling, though was surprised to find he did not fit in well with his comrades due to his brash and prickly nature. He still struggles with this, especially due to his lack of trust in anyone else here. He figured out very quickly that most of the men here are not here willingly, and must have done something to earn a place in Likho’s Trench.

Visual Description: Dmitri is clean shaven and regarded as attractive, even with the cleft lip he was born with, though his tired, cold hazel eyes age him more than the rest of his youthful face suggests. He doesn’t care much for his appearance anymore, thinking about his appearance only for the sake of comfort against the cold. He always has a cigarette burning.

Arseniy Zimin

Kiril Orlov

Age: Late 30’s

Ethnicity: White - Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Kiril is stoic and intimidating, keeping to himself the vast majority of the time. He doesn’t speak up often, but when he does, commands respect. He is reasonable to argue with, though there is an ever present rage that lies just under the surface.

Abilities: Construction aid, excellent hand-to-hand fighter and a good shot to boot. In charge or organising the supplies and maintaining order, even when rations are scarce.

Voice: Gruff and hoarse - the burns to his face left permanent damage to his throat. He speaks softly, but with a steely detachment that makes those around him uneasy.

Background: Kiril is the pinnacle of the 1900’s breadwinner. Growing up alongside his brother Lev, their caring parents drove home what it means to be a real man who encourages and takes care of his family, a concept that remains vastly important to him - though Lev took a different path as they got older. He is married with two young daughters at home, and worked in his village’s military camp as one of the higher-up trainers. Before the war, he took Lev in after he experienced financial difficulties, and the then distant brothers began to bond as they had as children. However, after the two’s arrival at Likho’s Trench, their bond has shattered, with Kiril refusing to respond to Lev’s pleas for reconnection.

Visual Description: Kiril is well built and tall, with a full mousy beard and short, slightly greying hair. He has light green eyes, and a large burn scar on the right side of his face and down his neck and right shoulder. He rarely cracks a smile, and even when he does he never loses his intense, intimidating stare.

Age: 19

Ethnicity: White - Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian, Sanctelisc

Personality: Stanislav is a proud, patriotic and abrasive young man with a strong chip on his shoulder. He makes a point to act older and more sure of himself than he is, with a particular sensitivity to being seen as vulnerable or weak. However, as prickly as he is, he is also deeply intelligent and sensitive when it counts.

Abilities: Strong willed in debates, often speaking up for himself and openly backing up opinions he agrees with. When his social link is maxed out, the player gets the skill Brash Confidence.

Voice: Clear, though harsh. Even when following the commands of those who outrank him, there is always a rebellious tone, a bitterness towards authority. His Sanctelisc is good, though he talks with a slavic accent, and isn’t fully fluent. In the trench, he always has a slight sniffle.

Background: Stanislav has always been a hard-headed boy from a proud military family. His patriotism comes from the generations of men in his family who volunteered for war and came back heroes in their own right, with his father especially celebrated decorated with medals for his contributions. Battling with his eagerness to please his father and his dedication to his education, Stanislav differed from his 3 older brothers, who applied the moment they came of age, by delaying his enlistment until after completing his university degree, to the disappointment of his father. The final straw came during his and Arthur’s arrest and deployment to Likho’s Trench, causing his father and brothers to disown him for his perceived involvement in resisting his army calling.

Visual Description: Stanislav is not an average height, well built young man with thin, cropped blonde hair and deep blue sunken eyes. He has a relatively handsome face, though his nose - which has clearly been broken a few times - draws away from that. He has thick eyebrows, a strong square jaw and a mole on his left cheek and forehead, as well as a dimple on his right side. He is always wearing a hat.

Pyotr Ushakov

Mukesh Kapoor

Age: Early 30’s

Ethnicity: South Asian - Hutar

Place of Birth: Hutar

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Hutari, Tvaristanian

Personality: Mukesh is a friendly, sincere man who does his best to remain optimistic, even in the most dire circumstances. He makes an effort to get to know those around him on a deep level, though this makes others in the trench wary of him and his charm. Though he can be a bit of a punching bag among the other men for his lack of understanding of the climate or culture, Mukesh takes this in stride.

Abilities: Despite the wariness given to overly friendly folks in the trench, Mukesh’s personability is undeniable. Even if he isn’t popular in the group, he has a calming magnetism that can’t help but put others at ease. When his social link is maxed out, the player gets the skill Sincerity.

Voice: Light and warm. Though he is passably fluent in Tvaristanian, he still speaks the language in an unmistakable Hutari tone. He is aware of his linguistic disadvantage, and so has a tendency to talk with his hands as much as his mouth.

Background: Mukesh’s sense of justice and aggressive selflessness has always been his greatest strength, as well as his biggest hindrance - constantly struggling to prioritise between the needs of those he loves and the needs of everyone else around him. As an adult, this sense of justice made him an exceptionally involved member of his community, investing himself in the problems of others no matter what it cost him, or his wife and young children. Once the war kicked off, Mukesh didn’t hesitate to sign up to aid his fellow man, arriving in Likho’s Trench by pure happenstance.

Visual Description: Mukesh is shorter than average height with a frame bordering on wiry, despite his large appetite. He has a long face, well kept facial hair and thick black wavy locks, as well as small silver earrings. Though his skin tone is darker and warmer than many of the men in the trench, what makes him stand out is his abundance of winterwear: thick knitted scarves and gloves sent as gifts from home. The other men tend to poke fun at him for his aversion to the cold, especially since he is almost always shivering.

Ivan Myasnikov

Age: Late 20’s

Ethnicity: White - Koltrian

Place of Birth: Koltrian

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian, Koltrian

Personality: Maksim is a stoic, awkward man whose humour leaves much to be desired. He is always deadpan, and his bluntness sometimes comes across rude, though it’s not intentional. He doesn’t let his disfigurement get to him, and makes as much light of it as he can. Deep down, Maksim is prone to depression, and is very anxious about his place amongst the other men.

Abilities: Though Maksim is not the most influential, well liked or strong willed, he is a jack of all trades. He has enough social standing to be personable, enough sense to be reasonable, and enough wit to read the room and act accordingly. When his social link is maxed out, the player gets the skill Universal Ally.

Voice: Average pitch for a man his age, but monotonous, even slightly robotic at times. His voice doesn’t give anything away, but under enough pressure the monotone shield begins to crack, as does his voice.

Background: Maksim’s fatal flaw is his habit of coasting through life, involving himself in what his peers deem important. While this, along with his looks, made him a local heartthrob as a young man, Maksim’s lack of identity has always been a struggle. He joined the cadets as a teenager because it’s what his friends did. He then later joined army reserves for the same reason, a choice that got him permanently disfigured. Now, Maksim will do anything to avoid danger.

Visual Description: Maksim is a tall, well built young man with shaved brown hair , bright blue eyes and thick eyebrows. Though his face is still well shaped, the accident caused most of his face and torso to be severely burnt, with much of his upper jaw and parts of his nose missing. Maksim sports a WW1-era prosthetic wooden mask that covers his nose and jaw, as well as his glasses which are attached to the mask. Though still in his 20’s, stress and injury have aged his face, making him look much older.

Fyodor Morozov

Dmitri Malinin

Age: Early 50’s

Ethnicity: White - Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Calm and kind, and has an air of feebleness, though is strong-willed and territorial when provoked. He tends to stay on the side-lines during Trials, though has a tendency to ask accusatory questions with the intention of getting the target to either slip and expose themself or prove their innocence in a way no one can argue with (though this distresses many of the men)

Abilities: Extremely capable sniper, keen-eyed and clever, adept in survival tactics and hunting.

Voice: Cool yet honeyed, with a very strong Russian accent. He speaks slowly and carefully, and can jump from upbeat to cold in a way that is often jarring. Has a low, friendly laugh, though mawkish due to his habit of laughing at inappropriate times.

Background: Fyodor used to live in a much larger city, though when he got married he and his wife moved to a small town in the outskirts of Russia, as his wife wanted to be away from her overbearing father. He was the town’s primary source of game due to his hunting experience, becoming one of the pivotal members of his community. Now, Fyodor’s hunting skills make him an asset in the trench as well, being the main source of food for the men. His sniper rifle is an unusual sight for common soldiers, but through a mix of bribery and proof of skill, Fyodor managed to smuggle it in.

Visual Description: Fyodor is often mistaken for being older than he actually is due to his rugged appearance. He has thin grey hair cut extremely short, and never wears his hat. He has a large hooked nose that appears to have been broken and healed several times, long earlobes and deep-set blue eyes. He is often friendly and smiling, to the point that other soldiers refer to him as “the little old man” despite the fact that he towers over the other soldiers when upright. He moves slowly and his hands shake often, though is still an excellent marksman despite this.

Age: Mid 40’s

Ethnicity: White - Half Tvaristanian, Half Bulskan

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Arseniy is a shy, quietly passionate man - naïve to a fault and cares deeply for his comrades, though struggles to put it into words. He has difficulties socially, but lights up when talked to about his special interests, especially dogs. Much more of an actions man than a words man.

Abilities: Main construction of the trench - unlocks new areas to explore with every chapter. Very knowledgeable about animals, especially dogs, and decent at hunting, though not as adept as Fyodor.

Voice: Soft-spoken and deep pitched, with a tendency to mutter and mumble under his breath rather than directly stand up for himself. However, when engaged in conversation on topics that interest him, especially dogs, Arseniy lights up and speaks clearly but quickly, with enough enthusiasm to surprise anyone who doesn’t know him well.

Background: Arseniy is atypical for the 1900’s man, his father heavily discouraging his son’s softheartedness from a young age. As a result of this, as well as being bullied for his awkward personality and social difficulties, Arseniy’s best friends have always been animals, especially his family’s 3 hunting dogs. Though he didn’t grow up with her, his father remarried when Arseniy was in his early 20’s to a woman who had a daughter, Arseniy’s older step-sister Alla. Though he admired her, she never really took to him like a brother due to his awkward intensity. As he grew up, his gentle nature made joining the war a great challenge for him, and despite being one of the longer lasting members of Likho’s Trench, he hasn’t managed to properly befriend any of his comrades yet.

Visual Description: Arseniy is a broad, short man with thinning grey hair, a permanent 5 o’clock shadow and a well-maintained moustache. His glasses make his brown eyes look small, and is almost always smiling to himself. He tries to look pleasant and approachable, but sometimes comes off as too keen. He is also muscular from his time working in construction.

Lev Orlov

Age: Mid 30’s

Ethnicity: White - Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Lev is carefree and optimistic, though occasionally to the point of frustration for others. He’s strongly anti-patriot, and very vocal about his politics. He is a real man-of-the-people, or at least tries to be, and is very attentive to the worries and needs of his comrades - and has made a few friends in the short time he has been in the trench.

Abilities: Construction aid, has an influence on the men due to his friendliness and fearless honesty. In the know about trench gossip.

Voice: Hearty and jubilant, with a voice that tends to ring through the room. He is always friendly, and almost never raises his voice, preferring to gently reason with those who can be reasoned with. However, he can be brash and even rude with those who can’t be.

Background: Lev was always the wild child of the family, especially when compared to his austere and regimented brother Kiril. When he failed to live up to his parent’s expectation of masculinity, preferring to pursue his whims and passions freely, he left his family home at 16 to make a life for himself. However, his adventurous lifestyle was not sustainable, especially in a culture of conservatism, which got him into financial debt. Left single, friendless and broke, Lev crashed with his brother’s new family - rebuilding the bond with Kiril and delighting his nieces as the fun uncle. Though, upon the brother’s arrival to Likho’s Trench, they are no longer on speaking terms, though Lev is not one to give up so easily.

Visual Description: Lev is not as tall as his brother, nor as burly, but has the same mousy coloured hair. He has some mild burn scars on his chest, but more noticeably a large scar across his left eye, which is missing. His hair is shaved, but he cares for maintaining his moustache.

Stanislav Voronin

Age: Late 50’s

Ethnicity: White - Koltrian

Place of Birth: Koltrubíč

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Pyotr is a quiet, austere man, with a tendency for people-pleasing - even to the point that it overrides his sense of right and wrong. He keeps his distance from others and rarely engages in conversation with the other men, which often gets him overlooked. However, Pyotr is very aware of his surroundings, and knows his own limits enough to seek aid when he needs it.

Abilities: Pyotr is very familiar with his surroundings - from the lay of the land in and around the trench to the kinds of game, threats and opportunities in the area. He is also adept at understanding the people around him. When his social link is maxed out, the player gets the skill Best Intentions.

Voice: Meek, but firm. He has a tendency to mumble to himself, which makes those around him uneasy. His voice is croaky from age and the cold, but beneath it is a quiet sureness. He rarely speaks, and if he does, there is always a carefully selected purpose to every word he chooses.

Background: Though Pyotr was born Koltrian, his mother’s passing in childbirth and father’s eventual abandonment got him adopted by a Tvaristanian aristocrat and his wife as a toddler. As a result, Pyotr not only is completely out of touch with his heritage, but was raised to have a severe super-helper syndrome, believing his safety and self-worth is directly tied to being grateful for and appealing to his parents, and as he grew older, Tvaristan in and of itself. Pyotr would happily die for the country that took him in, even if that involved being sent to Likho’s Trench.

Visual Description: Pyotr is a short, scrawny man with thin grey hair cropped on the sides and back, and strong cheekbones. He wears large rounded glasses, and his once youthful face has sunk with age and stress. He wears a turtleneck under his coat, and his downturned brown eyes tend to make him always look on the verge of tears. He is bony and fragile-looking, but not as feeble as he looks.

Age: Mid 40’s

Ethnicity: White - Tvaristanian

Place of Birth: Tvaristan

Currently Living: Tvaristan Territory - Likho’s Trench

Languages: Tvaristanian

Personality: Ivan is a hardy, no-nonsense figurehead in the trench. He has a habit of acting especially tough on younger members of the trench. Even if much of this is his paternal nature, his version of unwarranted tough love tends to irritate others. He is the embodiment of a rough street thug, to the point where many of the men have wondered if he has gang ties.

Abilities: Ivan is a commanding presence, able to keep his crew in command and take over chaotic situations should the need arise. When his social link is maxed out, the player gets the skill Last Resort.

Voice: Gravelly and harsh. He has a tendency to swear and use crude slang as part of his intimidation, as well as a reflection of his upbringing. He doesn’t laugh often, but when he does it is surprisingly hearty, and he tends to wheeze and snort.

Background: Ivan never had much throughout his life, and had to fight for every scrap he could get. Growing up in a poor city surrounded by gang violence, he learned early that being sympathetic gets you nowhere. He got into fights often, and even began to make a name for himself in underground bare-knuckle boxing rings, making it clear to gangs around him that he wasn’t someone to mess with. His propensity for violence only aids his standing in the trench, and makes him either your greatest ally or your worst nightmare to live next to.

Visual Description: Ivan is a stocky, balding man with wide, rough features. He has grey/blue eyes and an uneven shave, with heavy wrinkles, a square jaw and a cold gaze. Under his clothes, he is covered in tattoos, some he got in his youth and others he got during his time in prison (it is clear by their level of detail which are which). He also has a scar on the left side of his jaw, and many others that can’t be seen.
